Commodity Overview – Cocoa

  • Over 80% of Cocoa is being produced by smallholders, with family owned cocoa blocks typically being less than five ha in size
  • Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are the two largest cocoa-producing countries, accounting for over 60% of global cocoa production, where cocoa has historically been a large driver of deforestation.
  • The processing and manufacturing of finished cocoa products typically occur in Europe. Between 2017 – 2018, European markets exported the highest amount of chocolate, with Germany leading the way.
